ECU Remapping For Plant Machinery & Construction Equipment

Where the large-capacity engines used in plant and construction are concerned, 5-15% gains in torque and horsepower can have a significant impact on productivity – increasing the rate at which you can power through tough jobs, and reducing the amount of time that operators spend negotiating tough terrain.

By fine-tuning the engine management software used in modern machinery, also known as ECU remapping, we maximise operational efficiency and ensure that you get the most out of your equipment.

Mass-produced engines are often delivered with a suboptimal ECU map. Put another way, most engines used for industrial applications have plenty of headroom for improvement.

As the industry’s leading plant tuning specialists, we’re uniquely positioned to re-write standard manufacturer’s maps; adjusting parameters like turbo boost pressure, fuel delivery pressure and injection timing to eke out more torque and horsepower.

But that’s not to say that a plant or construction remap has to increase peak power. We customise every remap to match your requirements, and often find that equipment owners would prefer to add more power in the mid-range, or boost torque at lower revs (rpm) for enhanced efficiency.

Also, remaps can be used to remove restrictive features prior to the export of industrial machinery. For example, a remap could be coded to disable an AdBlue system before an excavator was exported outside the European Union.

How Our Plant & Construction Remapping Works

All heavy-duty equipment with a modern diesel engine has an ECU. This is a computer  responsible for managing many aspects of an engine’s performance, including turbo boost pressure, fuel pressure, fuel injection timing and injection duration using a map or database of values.

Our engine remaps, developed by exhaustive R&D, make a series of carefully-calibrated adjustments to these values; modifying parameters like injection duration or tweaking a torque limiter to enhance performance.

All of our field-proven plant and construction remaps are developed at our UK headquarters in the South West of England, and installed by our growing global network of trained and authorised agents.

We remap all Plant Machinery & Construction Equipment

Although the requirements and limitations vary on a case-by-case basis, we create maps for almost all modern diesel engines to fine-tune performance and enhance operational efficiency.

We have an extensive library of field-proven maps, but our highly-skilled team also has the expertise needed to create custom maps where the situation demands it.

Excavator & Backhoe Remapping

They belong in different weight classes, but excavators and backhoes are alike in the sense that their engines are normally under heavy load. Tasked with managing locomotion, powering attachments and providing the power required to move large amounts of material, they generally draw on every Nm of available torque.

By modifying parameters like injection timing and pressure, the remapping process gives excavators and backhoes some much needed headroom: allowing the equipment to power through jobs more efficiently.

Bulldozer & Loader Remapping

Bulldozers, track and wheel loaders are all built around large diesel engines designed to provide large amounts of torque. These engines are generally well-optimised, but can be fine-tuned to unlock 5-15% increases in low-end power.

This is because heavy construction equipment like bulldozers and wheel loaders often roll out of the factory with a map designed to cope with extreme climates, low quality fuel or infrequent maintenance. In our experience, there’s normally a significant amount of untapped potential that can be accessed via the remapping process.

Mobile Crane Remapping

Mobile, city and crawler cranes all benefit from the increased torque delivered by a custom remap. When remapping cranes, we tend to focus on widening power bands so that more torque is available at lower revs or higher gears; speeding up tedious tasks.

Mobile cranes also benefit from increased torque and horsepower when they’re on the road. With more power available at the bottom of your rev range, and improved throttle response, it’s much easier to pull away from junctions and negotiate hills.

The fuel savings make a big difference too. By tweaking injection timing and pressure, we can often improve economy by 5-15% which makes a big difference to your bottom line if your cranes spend a lot of time on the road.

Roller, Scraper & Grader Remapping

Equipment used to move and level earth always benefits from extra torque. Remapping rollers, scrapers and graders also provides an opportunity to tweak the parameters that control things like throttle response, and the power available at lower RPMs, making vehicles more responsive – and more tractable.

There are fuel savings to be eked out too: When remapping an engine, we can often make seemingly small adjustments to fuel injection pressure and timing, which saves a significant amount of fuel over the 1,200 - 1,500 machine hours your equipment works every year.

Most of the construction equipment managers that we work with find that remapping rollers, scrapers and graders delivers an immediate and sustained boost to productivity, as well as long-term reductions in daily running costs.

Skid Steer & Telehandler Remapping

Smaller and more agile construction equipment still benefits from the remapping process. Here, most clients ask us to try for a balance between power and efficiency: Boosting power to reduce the time it takes to move loads, or improve handling, while minimising running costs with a measured improvement to fuel efficiency.

Over the thousands of hours your skid steers and telehandlers spend moving around sites - or transiting between projects - these small improvements can make a significant difference to your bottom line.
