Custom Remaps For Harvesters And Feller Bunchers

To thrive in an increasingly-competitive landscape, you need to maximise productivity. Remapping a harvester or feller buncher allows you to unlock previously-untapped reserves of torque and horsepower, smooth power delivery, or fine-tune engine performance to increase fuel efficiency by 10-30%.

In the round, these improvements enable operators to power through tough jobs in less time, improve tractability on rough or uneven terrain, reduce your running costs, and improve the efficiency of your day-to-day operations. Simply put, our software solutions enable forestry companies and independent contractors to achieve more for less.

Backed by an industry-leading R&D function, our engineers develop custom remaps for all modern harvesters and feller bunchers, including all models of John Deere, Bell, Komatsu, Tigercat, Caterpillar, Ponsse, Doosan and Hitachi.

Our remaps are written and tested at our UK HQ in the South West of England. They are then distributed by a global network of authorised remapping agents – trained to deliver a uniformly high level of service.

Why Remap a Harvester or Feller Buncher?

Modern forestry equipment is often de-tuned in the factory. There are several reasons for this: Manufacturers may want to improve emissions figures so they can market their equipment in a specific way, or may be trying to guarantee reliability in countries where fuel quality is low and access to maintenance is poor.

Alternatively, they may be re-using one engine across multiple models in range, and need to create differentiation by lowering the power or performance of low-end variants. Whatever the case, the fact remains that most modern harvesters and feller bunchers have significant headroom for improvement.

When we develop a remap for a harvester or feller buncher, we are exacting and methodical. After running a battery of diagnostic tests to ensure that the equipment is running at peak efficiency, we torque model the ECU software to ensure that we have an accurate estimate of the performance increases we’re likely to gain, and a full understanding of any downstream changes.

This meticulous process allows us to spot opportunities for improvement, and study the impact of any changes on your equipment.

When developing remaps for forestry equipment, we always prioritise sustainable improvements to performance, and have a rigorous process in place to ensure that remaps are always sympathetic to the limitations of your equipment.

Where harvesters and feller bunchers are concerned, the headline figures may look relatively modest: In some cases, we’re talking about a 9-15% boost to hp or a 10% increase in fuel efficiency. But over the 1,500+ hours your equipment will run every year, these gains quickly add up.

Feller Buncher and Harvester Remapping Explained

We’ve already outlined the extensive R&D process we use to develop a remap, but understanding the intricacies of remapping can still be helpful.

In simple terms, a feller buncher or harvester’s engine is managed by a computer called an ECU or electronic control unit. This computer consults a database (or map) of values every time it reacts to an input, and editing the values in this database allows you to fine-tune engine performance in a variety of scenarios. Typically, we will make a series of carefully-calibrated edits to parameters like fuel injection or turbo boost pressure to advance or improve power delivery.

The alternative is to intercept and alter signals from the ECU to the rest of the vehicle, which is how tuning boxes operate, but making modifications at source gives our engineers much greater control of the output.

In business since 2014, our engineers have developed an extensive library of field-proven maps for most harvesters and feller bunchers. We also have the capability to develop custom maps for unique applications, eg. improving low-end torque for increased tractability on rough terrain, or disabling emissions control systems prior to export outside the EU.
